Best Management Practices for the Transition to a Water-Sensitive City in the South of Portugal

The uncertainty that arises from future environmental and climatic challenges requires new approaches towards urban water management in Mediterranean cities. In this work, an cycle (UWC) strategy based on the best practices (BMPs) of water-sensitive design (WSUD) is proposed for transition a coastal city south Portugal into (WSC), line with Municipal Strategy Climate Change Adaptation Loulé (EMAAC Loulé). city’s watershed was identified using ArcMap Hydrology toolset geospatial data provided by Loulé’s Council Operational Unit to Circular Economy (UOACEC). A broad characterisation study area conducted, identifying existing resources further develop SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. outputs, precipitation events records, survey results were used identify flood-prone areas. opportunities threats strategy, which focused critical areas supported BMPs, including source control, attenuation, treatment infiltration measures, permeable pavements, rainwater harvesting systems, bioretention basins. approach designed increase resilience climate extremes, as well community engagement UWC management.
